Magnetic Propeller Outflows 3

چکیده
A model is developed for magnetic 'propeller'-driven outflows which cause a rapidly rotating magnetized star accreting from a disk to spin-down. Energy and angular momentum lost by the star goes into expelling most of the accreting disk matter. The theory gives an expression for the effective Alfvén radius R A (where the inflowing matter is effectively stopped) which depends on the mass accretion rate, the star's mass and magnetic moment, and the star's rotation rate. The model points to a mechanism for 'jumps' between spin-down and spin-up evolution and for the reverse transition, which are changes between two possible equilibrium configurations of the system. In for example the transistion from spin-down to spin-up states the Alfvén radius R A decreases from a value larger than the corotation radius to one which is smaller. In this transistion the 'propeller' goes from being " on " to being " off. " The ratio of the spin-down to spin-up torque (or the ratio for the reverse change) in a jump is shown to be of order unity.

Launching of Jets by Propeller Mechanism
We carried out axisymmetric simulations of disk accretion to a rapidly rotating magnetized star in the “propeller” regime. Simulations show that propellers may be “weak” (with no outflows), and “strong” (with outflows). Investigation of the difference between these two regimes have shown that outflows appear only in the case where the “friction” between the disk and magnetosphere is sufficientl...
متن کاملPropeller-driven Outflows and Disk Oscillations
We report the discovery of propeller-driven outflows in axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic simulations of disk accretion to rapidly rotating magnetized stars. Matter outflows in a wide cone and is centrifugally ejected from the inner regions of the disk. Closer to the axis there is a strong, collimated, magnetically dominated outflow of energy and angular momentum carried by the open magnetic fie...
متن کاملEffect of the temperature profile of the accretion disk on the structure of jets and outflows around protostars
Magnetic fields play an important role in creating, driving, and in the evolution of outflows and jets from protostars and accretion disks. On the other hand, the temperature profile of the accretion disks may also affect the structure of the magnetic field and outflows. In this paper, we use the self-similar method in cylindrical coordinates to investigate the effect of the temperature profile...
متن کاملMultishot diffusion-weighted PROPELLER magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen.
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using multishot PROPELLER for diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) of the abdomen. MATERIALS AND METHODS Diffusion-weighted abdominal imaging was performed in 9 healthy volunteers and 3 patients using both single-shot DW-SE-EPI and multishot DW-PROPELLER (BLADE sequence). We compared ADC measurements in phantoms, liver and p...
متن کاملPROPELLER MRI: clinical testing of a novel technique for quantification and compensation of head motion.
While head motion is considered a significant problem in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), there is no data to quantify its extent, severity, or effect on image quality. PROPELLER (Periodically Rotated Overlapping ParallEL Lines with Enhanced Reconstruction) MRI offers a novel means of quantifying and compensating for head motion. We performed axial T2-weighted PROPELLER (motion corrected: P-CR...
